NCC to Bring Internet to Rural Communities

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is teaming up with other groups to fix the problem of poor internet access in rural communities in Nigeria. One of their key partners is the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), an international group that works to improve digital access in developing countries.

They held a two-day workshop in Abuja from June 3 to 4, 2025. The event focused on how to support “community networks”—local efforts that bring internet and digital tools to rural areas that big companies often ignore. The workshop brought together government officials, community leaders, tech experts, and investors to talk about the challenges and possible solutions.

Dr. Aminu Maida, the head of NCC (represented by Abraham Oshadami), said the goal is to make sure every Nigerian can get online. He mentioned problems like the high cost of devices, lack of internet infrastructure, and tough licensing rules. He said community networks could help solve these problems and that the NCC is ready to support them.

Leveraging Technology for Financial Inclusion In Rural Nigeria

Kathleen Diga from APC said that smaller, local groups like cooperatives and social enterprises can help close the digital gap. She emphasised the need to listen to local communities when creating solutions.

Other groups like the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) also gave technical presentations during the workshop. They want to create a shared plan that includes using solar energy and other sustainable methods to support internet access.

In the end, all the groups agreed that internet access is becoming a basic need, and stronger partnerships are needed to make sure no community is left behind.
