Bauchi Governor Mediates in Farmer-Herder Dispute

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, has stepped in to defuse disputes between farmers and herders in Darazo Local Government Area, following recent violent clashes that left several injured.

The governor chaired a high-level peace meeting in Nahutan Darazo village, joined by the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police and the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS). The dialogue offered an open forum for conflict resolution among community members and key stakeholders.

Governor Mohammed expressed concern over long-standing land use disputes, highlighting the state’s allocation of 2,500 hectares of forest land for farming—some of which was in Alia, Sade, and Yautari—triggering resentment among Fulani herders who felt their traditional grazing paths were threatened. He acknowledged that some lands had not been used as intended but sublet for profit, worsening mistrust.

He condemned the violence, urged restraint from all parties, and pledged stronger mediation efforts. A new committee comprising land officials, traditional leaders, and security personnel will now reassess land allocations, demarcate boundaries, and safeguard grazing reserves.

The governor commended local peacemakers and emphasised the shared responsibility of maintaining peace. A closed-door session with stakeholders followed to develop a lasting resolution.
