Nigeria Champions AI-Driven Food Security at UN Summit

Nigeria joined other African nations on Monday in calling for urgent global cooperation on food security and climate resilience at the UN Summit for Food Systems Stocktake dubbed the UNFSS+4 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Speaking at the high-level session, Vice President Kashim Shettima outlined Nigeria’s multifaceted approach to transforming its agricultural sector through the adoption of Artificial Intelligence, geospatial tools, and satellite-based climate intelligence. These technologies, he said, are being used to monitor production, reduce waste, and connect smallholder farmers to markets.

Shettima emphasized that food insecurity is no longer a regional problem but a global one, noting that a broken food system anywhere threatens humanity as a whole. He highlighted the National Food Systems Transformation Pathway as Nigeria’s flagship framework, driving rural investment and human capital development.

He also spotlighted the Presidential Initiative on Food Security, which targets key staples like maize, rice, cassava, and wheat using climate-smart innovations and support for women and youth in agriculture.

Additionally, Nigeria’s Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones, developed with support from the African Development Bank and IFAD, are linking rural farmers to international markets and attracting private investment.

Leaders from Ethiopia, the UN, and across Africa echoed the urgency, stressing the need for bold reforms, climate-aligned financing, and collective global action
